Installing APK files is safe when you take a few simple precautions.
Before you install
- Check that the developer name and package name match the app page.
- Keep Google Play Protect turned on; it scans apps installed from any source.
- Only allow installs from unknown sources for the browser or file manager you are using, and turn it off again afterwards.
After you install
- Review the permissions the app asks for. A game rarely needs access to your contacts or SMS.
- Keep your phone updated with the latest security patches.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use.
