Iron Vanguard review: tactical mech battles in short bursts

A smart squad shooter where cover really matters. Missions can feel similar after a while, but switching between mechs keeps it interesting.

7.8 out of 10

Our verdict on Iron Vanguard

What we liked

  • Destructible cover changes every fight
  • Three mechs with clear roles
  • Good controller support

What could be better

  • Missions start to feel similar
  • Large download
  • AI teammates sometimes block doorways

Iron Vanguard puts you in charge of three mechs and asks you to use each one for what it does best.

How it plays

Switching between the tank, the gunner and the support mech with one tap is the core of the game. Cover can be destroyed, so the safe spot at the start of a fight rarely lasts.

What could be better

After twenty missions the objectives repeat, and the AI teammates occasionally get stuck in narrow spaces.

Should you play it?

If you like tactical shooters, yes. Play in short sessions and the repetition never becomes a problem.
